World's Best accolade for Suffolk cider
World's Best Cider
A SUFFOLK cider maker is toasting its success after scooping the top prize ata new awards event. Aspall Premier Cru was crowned the World's Best Cider at the World Cider
Awards 2008, which were launched this year by Beers of the World magazine. Judges described the tipple, created at the Aspall plant near Debenham, as "an
elegant well-bred cider" with "great bubbles and a very clean taste". "Well-bred, on the good side of dryness without being paint stripper,
gum-puckering acidity in the finish makes you long for another sip," judges
said. Adrian Tierney Jones, chairman of the judges said it was the overall
winner "by a clear mile". "It's a crossover cider, a Katharine Jenkins or Bryn Terfel of a cider. I love
its possibilities with food as well. It's dry as well which gives it an
aristocratic quality. Aspalls are great cider makers and this confirms it,"
he said. "This doesn't come from a traditional cider area, but it does come from cider
makers who have plied their trade for centuries." Two other Aspall ciders, the Aspall Draught Suffolk Cyder and the Aspall
Organic Suffolk Cyder, were highly commended in the World's Best Medium Cider
and the World's Best Speciality Cider categories respectively. Aspall sales and marketing assistant Jenny Beverley said they were "quite
ecstatic" about the accolades. Aspall partner Barry Chevallier Guild said: "Since Aspall Suffolk Cyder was
relaunched in 2000 it has won numerous awards for quality. However, winning
the World's Best Cider in the first year of the awards is the ultimate
accolade. "Our ciders are made from only 100% fresh-pressed English apple juice and
contain no concentrates, additives or water, which gives them their exquisite
taste profile." --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~
