Haverfolk News with notice of Loughton Folk Day
Haverfolk News17th May 2012
Hi gang,
Peter Walters here. What a great evening it was with John & Nicole, aka Cloudstreet last night. If you weren’t there you missed something indeed. John Foxen’s report is below.
Open Session, 16h May: Panic stations for our Guv’nor Simon Oliver on Wednesday night. At 6pm he telephoned our Australian guests Cloudstreet to find out where they were. “No worries, sport,” Nicole assured him. “John’s just come out of the shower.” “But where are you?” asked Simon. “Maidstone,” said Nicole nonchalantly. That’s 40 miles from the White Horse in Goodmayes and involves getting through the Dartford tunnel and the outskirts of London. “We may have to put on a lot more floor singers than we planned,” said a worried Simon at 8pm. He needn’t have worried. These canny Queenslanders are used to crossing the great Australian wastes to get to gigs, even travelling to parts of the desert where “it’s so hot you can fry an egg in your front room”. Maidstone to Goodmayes? No worries, sport. Nicole Murray and John Thompson arrived on time and put on a terrific show, treating us to those powerful close harmonies for which they are justly famous on fine Australian songs such as the sugar-cane cutting song Sign On Day, Stringybark & Greenhide and The Song of Artesian Water. Margaret and I were particularly taken with To The West in which the writer manages to rhyme Shouldn’ [sic] with Plum Pudden. Nicole delighted us with her violin and flute playing while John showed his skill on concertina. His gigantic baritone concertina with its booming tones was particularly impressive and certain of us were hatching plans for sneaking it away from him while he wasn’t keeping one eye on it (fat chance). Many of their songs came from their new CD The Land Of Bright Gold but they did a couple of old favourites – Bill And The Bear and Dance Up The Sun. They also included a very upbeat version of the Copper family’s Thousands Or More. “We’ve been warned never to sing it in Sussex,” said John, referring to the Coppers’ home county. Well, they can sing it in Essex whenever they want. Any poor souls who missed them can catch Cloudstreet again at the Chippenham Folk Festival on the first weekend in June (you may also see Foxen there leaping about with the Wreckers Border Morris side but their distinctive black and gold tatters make them easy to avoid). Before Cloudstreet performed we opened with a quick singsong then Pep and Terry performed what appeared to be the extended version of Chas and Dave’s greatest hits. Dave Wilson sang his catchy and topical ditty about mining the asteroids and Jan Ayres gave us a short, sharp poem about how all the problems in her life seemed to begin with a three-letter word: men. Our youngest members Di, James and Berwyn brought out a song that was new to me (sorry I missed the title) then Ray Spilman sang Morning Of My Life. To mark the arrival of our Australian friends, Foxen brought out their song £10 Pom about emigrating from England to Australia back in the Fifties. Bill Pardon sang about The Critic From Hell (to whom could he be referring?). He was followed by Trevor Sharples with an instant poem that was a follow-up to a song by Bill in which he had lamented that his only friends on Myspace were a Welsh band called Cakehole Presley. “Cakehole Presley are cheating on Bill,” warned Trevor. “They have 45 other friends.” Andy Roberts brought out his self-penned favourite The Rowan Tree and Simon Oliver contributed his own song about the transportation of convicts to Australia, Lady Julian. A fine evening and there will be more next week, but the session will begin in the bar as we can’t have the function room until 9pm. Starting off in the bar – what a hardship eh?

For those who go along to any of Sue’s sessions and have a greater intellectual capacity than I, may like to check out the website before going along. http://sites.google.com/site/orpingtonfridayfolk/ John mentioned earlier that Loughton Folk Day goes ahead on Saturday, 19th May from 4pm to 10.30pm in the middle bar, Loughton Club, 8 Station Road, Loughton, IG10 4NX.
